Just three kilometres from Young along Murringo Road, planted to a brisk 500 metres above sea level, Grove Estate was originally sown to vines in 1886, by Croatian settlers who brought cuttings from their farms on the Dalmatian coast. Some of these ancient plantings, emigrated at a time when much of Europe was ruled by Hapsburg emperors, remain productive to this day. Somewhere near the Seaview end of McLaren Vale's Chapel Hill Road, a perfunctory passerine perched her pincers astride a pair of power poles and saw herself alit. Down she went amongst the dry grown branches of an old Grenache vineyard, setting the valuable veterans ablaze. The scorched site eventually came to the attention of a winemaking trio, the Messrs Leske, Tynan & Cooke, Masters of Wine and a venerable vintner, all driven by a consuming passion to make greater Grenache. Graeme and Michael Fechner brought back cuttings of the Weißer Herold grape, also known as Kerner, to their Eden Valley vineyard, following a research trip to Germany in 2001. The vines bloomed and found a new home away from home, where the felicitious, long calm ripening seasons encourage the grapes to form lusciously sweet fruit esters, redolent of all the tropical muscat characters which define the dulcet delicacy of the delightful Kerner. Grapefruits, lychee and applejack, an excellent choice of chilled Mosel style white to accompany dressed birds, savoury bakes and desserts.

Daniel Chaffey Hartwig and Theo Engela are the latest generation of the Chaffey family to ply their vinous trade in Australia. The original Chaffey Brothers were Canadian hydro engineers, true iconoclasts within their field of endeavour. They arrived in Australia 1886 and proceeded, along with a number of their decendants, to make an indelible mark on the Australian wine landscape. Chaffey Bros handmade minimal intervention wines come from individual parcels of low yielding vineyards, spread throughout the Barossa and Eden Valleys. Drawing on true old vines and complex soils, the modern day Chaffeys see themselves as parfumiers discovering delicate aromatics, part historians, preserving the purity of pristine fruit, part mad scientists, revelling in the lost art of small batch blending. Old vines of Eden Valley Riesling and Barossa Valley Grenache Shiraz are the building blocks, the timeless pillars of great great wines.
